About
Located at the City of Brevard Sports Complex at 824 Ecusta Road, the Brevard Dog Park, which opened in 2021, sits on 2.7 acres that was donated by Transylvania Regional Hospital/HCA.
A group of volunteers along with city staff and officials formed a task force to realize this public amenity. The park features two fenced-in areas, size segregated to accommodate large and small dogs. Located a short distance from nearby trails and parking, dogs are able to run off leash over grassy fields spotted with shade trees.
History
The dog park led by a citizen advocacy group since 2014 collected $3,700 in donation boxes in the intervening years. The project consistently ranked high for desired public amenities by City of Brevard residents over the past several years and was in fact the second-highest project to be commented on during a city-sponsored public project charette in 2018. Following HCA’s donation of the land the city formed a Dog Park Citizen Task Force made up of 19 volunteers. These volunteers worked in five separate committees; design, rules and procedures, fundraising, communications and budget. Volunteers ranged in age from 23 to 70+ and included three city staffers and three city council members.
This project was supported by a combination of public funds from the City of Brevard, private contributions and in-house labor thanks to the Public Works Department. The City committed $75,000 to the project with an additional $40,000 needed to complete the project. The Task Force solicited private contributions for this amount.
The City of Brevard helped to raise funds by offering personalized engraved bricks for sale at $100.00 per brick. The purchased bricks are installed at the entrance to the dog park. Residents also helped by making general donations.
HCA Healthcare (Hospital Corporation of America) donated the land to the city.
Thank you all for making this possible!
